I can’t believe I had never been to Ladurée before! I’m in London almost all the time and have been to Paris more than once, but I never had the time to go there, and – to be absolutely honest – I didn’t know what a macaron was until I read this post on A Girl, A Style in 2010. The first macarons I ate were some blue ones I had made myself due to the lack of a macaron shop like Ladurée or Pierre Hermé where I lived. They tasted quite good, like vanilla. I’ve tried various flavours and colours since then (for example pink ones), but wanted to try some from either Pierre Hermé or Ladurée after Briony of A Girl, A Style and some other people on Twitter had praised them to the skies and posted pictures of cute little macaron boxes with little jewel-like macarons inside. So off I went to Ladurée Burlington Arcade and bought my first ever macarons. Vanilla, Caramel with salted butter, Rose, Lemon and Raspberry. I bought them for a friend and me. My friend didn’t like them at all, so I could eat 4 and a half macarons alone. I’m not going to lie, one of them didn’t taste very good or, as my friend said, “a bit like soap”, but I loved the other 3 and a half! Rose is my favourite so far, and I have to try the other flavours as well, which I will do very soon. They’re a bit pricy with £1.60 for one macaron, but they count as ‘luxury treats’ and everyone can have some of those every now and then.
